Benefits of GPRS Streaming

The Qeeps platform delivers live mobile video streaming over GPRS, and does not require the mobile phone to have 3G coverage. This is a key point we like to explain to our customers, and this is why.

With GPRS you only get a tiny usable bandwidth of ~20kbps, compared to upwards of 80kbps - somtimes upto maybe 200kbps with 3G. This means that delivering video over 3G is a walk in the park as there is a good amount of bandwidth to use. Compressing video to work over 3G is pretty easy, and its the approach some other mobile solutions use.

However, 3G is not widely available even in technologically advanced countries like the UK - never mind abroad. Video encoded for 3G would be pretty unwatchable if you suddenly drop into standard GPRS coverage.

Moreover, with mobile data you are charged based on usage and not time. This means that if you are consuming 5 times the amount of data for 3G streaming, you are being charged 5 times as much by your mobile operator.

At Qeeps we use the proven GPRS streaming technology of Vemotion, who have been developing this technology for over 5 years. Our GPRS streaming, using H.264, gives amazing results at the low bandwidth of GPRS. This means that it will work reliably and consistently pretty much anywhere you can imagine.

GPRS / Internet Access Point (APN) settings for Orange UK

When using applications on your mobile phone that make use of mobile data, you often need to configure 'access points' on your phone. Access Points are network (and sometimes contract type) specific, but without them mobile data will not work.

Mobile operators usually have 3 Access Points - one for simple mobile webpages (WAP), onr for picture messaging (MMS), and a generic one for all other internet traffic. When using mobile data based applications like Qeeps that require more than just simple webpages, you will need to use the an internet access point.

Network operators will often send you the settings on request, but below are the settings for Orange in the UK:

Access Point: orangeinternet
UserName: web
Password: web

Qeeps shows Mobile Phone CCTV at IFSEC 2008

Qeeps had a successful show at IFSEC 2008 in the NEC in May 2008. Qeeps had its own stand in the CCTV section of the NEC, and we attracted many visitors. Demonstrations of mobile phone CCTV were well received with a significant increase in interest and sales following on from the show.

As well as exibiting our innovative service from our own stand, we also had a presence on stands from some of the DVR manufacturers that we provide the Qeeps service for. During the show you could find our product being demonstrated on the Samsung and JVC stands.

Qeeps on the N95 8GB

It has been reported that after streaming video on some older Nokia N95 8GB models, pressing the 'Back' key will occasionally cause the phone to reboot.

Nokia have released a firmware update for the N95 8GB which solves this problem. The upgrade will also fix a number of other issues you may have experienced on your N95.

The afected N95 models are those with a firmware version of V16 and before. You can find the firmware version of your phone by pressing the following keys in standby mode: *#0000#

The bug is fixed in version V.20.0.016. If your phone shows a version of V16.x.x or earlier then you should consider upgrading.

Access Point settings for Sony Ericsson

The Qeeps application needs the phone to be setup correctly to use internet data. Most phones come ready configured, but occasionally phones need to be setup manually.

The following instructions explain how to setup the internet access points on a Sony Ericsson.

Main Menu
Settings
Scroll right to Connectivity
Scroll down to data communication
Open Data Accounts
Check that a Data Account exists the uses an internet APN
If not, Select New Account and choose a relevant internet APN, save it
Back out one level and choose Internet Settings
Choose Settings for Java
Choose a profile that connects using a Data Account that uses an internet APN
If not, create a new profile and choose to connect using a relevant internet Data Account
Ensure this new profile is selected
